Deanna Klingel - Ginger Cookies

Mrs. Mikesell's Moravian Ginger Cookies from Avery's Battlefield
1 cup molasses
1Tablespoon ginger
1/2 cup lard and butter mixed
1 Tablespoon soda
1 1/2 cups flour
2 Tablespoons warm milk
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon clove

Heat molasses to boiling point. Add lard-butter mix, ginger, soda dissolved in warm milk, salt and flour. Mix them. Push it into an empty soda tin. Bury in the snow overnight. Cut the bottom out of the tin and push the dough out and slice it as you go. Put the round slices of dough on a flat pan. You can poke a little hole in the dough and run a ribbon through it if you want to hang them up, or you can just bake them. Make the oven moderately hot and bake them about ten minutes or so. Keep the baby and the children away from the oven.
